We ask all of our members to lead rides. Rides are the backbone of our club and without members volunteering to lead them, we simply wouldn’t be a cycling club. ‘Ride Leaders’ should not be a special status, but a description of every member.
Members are encouraged to sign up on the Ride App to lead or co-lead at least one ride per year. If you’re feeling nervous, team up with someone else and share the responsibility.

Special training is not obligatory, but we do provide Ride Lead Training throughout the year, as well as support and advice.
Speak to others – share questions and advice
One of the simplest, easiest and most effective ways to get a bit of support, advice or encouragement about leading a ride is to speak to a club member who has already done it. Don’t be afraid to chat to the person leading your ride, post on one of the Facebook Groups, contact the Ride Leading Secretary at [email protected] or reach out to another Board member.
Co-lead
Sign up to co-lead a ride that somebody else has advertised on the Ride App, or post your own ride and ask for a volunteer to co-lead with you.
Leading Rides – online training / discussion
We aim to deliver this 2-3 times per year, covering advice and guidance on leading enjoyable, safe club rides and sharing top tips and best practice to help members gain the confidence to lead their own rides. Dates for these online sessions will be advertised in the newsflash, on the Ride App, and on Facebook.
Ride Leading Skills Rides
We also run Ride Leading Skills Rides, giving those new to leading a chance to try it out in a ‘practice’ environment, with experienced members on hand to offer tips and answer questions. These are advertised on our Ride App.
Ride Leading Prompt Cards
Useful as a whistle stop tour of the ride leading training content, a quick reminder before you post or head out on a ride, or a reference point if you experience an incident on your ride… these cards can be downloaded on your smart phone* or saved as a screenshot for easy-access prompts whenever you might need them. Click on the link at the bottom of each image to open the card.
*If you don’t have one of these, you could print them out on small pieces of card and keep them in your saddle bag / pocket.
