Riding a Sportive with the Cowley Road Condors Cycling Club

What is a Sportive?

Sportives are organised mass rides and offer a great opportunity to ride out with hundreds or often thousands of other riders.  A sportive will normally feature short, medium and long routes of around 30, 50 and 100 miles, meaning there's a distance to suit everyone and there are feed stations at regular intervals to allow you to refuel en-route.

These events aren't races, but they do feature timing and the organisers will often specify gold, silver and bronze target times for those who want to add a further challenge to their ride.

There are some great sportives in the UK and also some classics on the continent (there's a good list here).  They make a great target for a season's riding too.

The Condors are very proud to have been part of the brilliant Bike Oxford sportive since it's inception.  Bike Oxford originally came to us to see if we could suggest some routes, but being the helpful lot we are we ended up getting a lot more involved than that and are now a big part of the day, manning the start line and signing the routes.

As well as helping to organise Bike Oxford, you'll always find a big pack of Condors riding the event too and we also offer a number of Sportive training days in advance of Bike Oxford to help riders who are newer to sportive riding to prepare for it.

A day riding a carefully curated route is great, but it's even better riding it with a group of good friends.  There are many regular sportive riders in the Condors, so you should always be able to organise a good gang to ride an event with.
